Who It Is For
Who these sessions are built for
If any of these sound like you, a session will save you months of second-guessing.
🏦
First-time investors in the UAE
Your savings sit in a UAE bank account earning very little. You know you should start, but account opening, forms and fund choices all look opaque from the outside.
🔄
Expats with a scattered portfolio
You already hold shares or funds across two or three platforms, picked up at different times for different reasons. You want a structure instead of a collection.
✈️
People who may leave the UAE one day
Your tax residency might change in a few years. That affects which fund domiciles and account types make sense today — not after you have moved.
What We Cover
What we work through
Getting set up correctly
Which internationally regulated platforms accept UAE residents, what documents you need (passport, Emirates ID, proof of address), and how the W-8BEN form works. Account opening usually takes one to three business days once your paperwork is clean.
Fund domicile and withholding tax
The same index can cost you very different tax depending on where the fund is registered. We go through US-domiciled versus Irish-domiciled (UCITS) funds and what that means for the dividends that actually reach your account.
Building the portfolio
Index funds versus individual stocks, how much to put in a single position, currency exposure when you earn in dirhams, and how much cash to keep outside the market.
Risk, review and behaviour
What a drawdown looks like before it happens, when rebalancing is worth it, and which headlines are genuinely worth reacting to. Most damage to a portfolio is self-inflicted.
The Detail
What UAE investors actually need to know
These are the rules most generic advice pages skip. Every figure below is public and verifiable — check it yourself before you act on it.
| Item | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Legal access | UAE residents, Emirati or expat, can invest in US markets. There is no local restriction. |
| Personal tax in the UAE | 0% on investment gains, dividends and interest. |
| Home-country tax | Still applies if you remain tax resident somewhere else. UAE residency alone does not cancel it. |
| Required US form | W-8BEN — declares your non-US status to the broker. |
| Dividend withholding | 30% on dividends from US-domiciled funds. There is no US–UAE income tax treaty to reduce it. |
| Irish-domiciled UCITS funds | 15% withholding applied at fund level — often more efficient for non-US investors. |
| US estate tax | US-situs assets above $60,000 can be exposed to US estate tax at rates up to 40%. The UAE has no estate tax treaty with the US. |
| Account opening time | Typically one to three business days once documents are submitted correctly. |

FAQ
Questions people ask me first
Can I buy US stocks if I live in Dubai?
Yes. There is no UAE restriction on residents investing in US markets. You open an account with an internationally regulated broker that accepts UAE residents, submit your passport, Emirates ID and proof of address, and file a W-8BEN form declaring that you are not a US person.
Do I pay tax on US shares as a UAE resident?
The UAE charges 0% personal tax on investment gains, dividends and interest. That does not make the investment tax-free, though: the US still withholds 30% of dividends paid by US-domiciled funds before the money reaches you, because there is no US–UAE income tax treaty. And if you are still tax resident in another country, that country’s rules continue to apply to you.
What is the W-8BEN form and why does it matter?
It is the US form on which you certify that you are not a US person. Brokers require it before they let you hold US securities. It is short, it is free, and it is renewed every few years — but an incomplete one can hold up your account.
Are Irish-domiciled ETFs better than US ones for UAE residents?
Frequently, yes — for two reasons: withholding on dividends is applied at 15% inside an Irish-domiciled UCITS fund rather than 30%, and Irish-domiciled funds are not US-situs assets for estate tax purposes. It is not automatic, though. It depends on your tax residency, what your platform offers and what you are actually buying, which is exactly the kind of thing we work through together.
What is the $60,000 estate tax issue?
Non-US persons only get a $60,000 exemption on US-situs assets — which includes US-listed shares and US-domiciled funds. Above that, the estate can face US estate tax at rates up to 40%. Only about fifteen countries have an estate tax treaty with the US, and the UAE is not one of them. Many UAE-based investors have never heard of this until it is a problem for their family.
How much money do I need to start?
Platform minimums are usually low, so that is rarely the real constraint. The more useful question is whether you have an emergency buffer in cash first, and whether the money you are investing is money you can leave alone for years. We start there.
Do you manage my money for me?
No. I do not take custody of client funds and I do not trade on anyone’s behalf. Your accounts stay in your name and under your control. My role is to make the mechanics and the trade-offs clear enough that you can make your own decisions.
